• Ivory Coast jail sentences for chimpanzee traffickers

Two men have been sentenced to six months in prison in the first case of wildlife trafficking brought in Ivory Coast. An Ivorian government lawyer said the judgement "sends a signal" that animal trafficking is being taken seriously. The men were arrested while trying to sell an infant chimp to a BBC reporter posing as the representative of a wealthy Asian buyer. Chimpanzees are in such sharp decline they are listed as endangered. Those in West Africa are judged to be critically endangered. Since Ibrahima and Mohamed Traore have remained in prison since their detention last December, they are deemed to have already served their sentences and are therefore free.

Demonstrators with banner reading (French) "UN: Halt the genocide in Ivory Coast" STORYLINE: Laurent Gbagbo clung to power in Ivory Coast on Wednesday as West African leaders said they will return to Ivory Coast to resume negotiations with him after a first visit failed to force him to surrender the presidency and hand power to the internationally recognised winner of last month's election. The 15-nation regional bloc ECOWAS (Economic Community Of West African States) had threatened military intervention if Gbagbo did not step aside and allow Alassane Ouattara to take over the presidency. The delegation reported on Wednesday on its mission to Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, whose country is the biggest player in ECOWAS. Instead of preparing a military strike on Wednesday, ECOWAS gave Gbagbo more time. A delegation of presidents from Sierra Leone, Benin and Cape Verde on Tuesday had delivered in person what they called an ultimatum to leave. Gbagbo rebuffed their efforts and did not depart the country into exile with them as had been hoped. Jonathan said the delegation would return to Abidjan on Monday. Nigeria has vowed to use "legitimate force" if Gbagbo does not relinquish power. ECOWAS, the Economic Community of West African States, has sent combat troops to several nations in the past two decades. There was no indication of imminent preparations for action in Ivory Coast. (31 May 2016) The Ivory Coast's former first lady, Simone Gbagbo, went on trial on Tuesday at the country's high court for crimes against humanity and war crimes. The prosecution said she participated in a committee that planned and organised abuses against supporters of her husband's opponent after 2010 elections. More than 3,000 people were killed after ex-President Laurent Gbagbo refused to accept defeat to now President Alassane Ouattara. Simone Gbagbo has been in custody since April 2011. She has been indicted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity, but Ivory Coast has refused to transfer her. The former president's ICC trial began in January. Various of meeting STORYLINE: Ivory Coast negotiators trying to end a four-month civil rebellion that has left hundreds dead and thousands displaced have reached a draft peace settlement, Prime Minister Affi Nguessan said on Friday. He did not give details of the agreement but confirmed that it had been reached during peace talks outside Paris. The accord is viewed as an ambitious undertaking that seeks to resolve ethnic, regional and political tensions contributing to years of bloodshed in Ivory Coast, once regarded as a haven of stability in volatile West Africa. Toussaint Alain, the official spokesman of Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo, welcomed the deal enthusiastically. Toussaint refused to speak about specifics, other than to say that Gbagbo, who is due to hold talks with President Jacques Chirac in Paris later on Friday, would remain in power. The French government, which brokered the peace talks, cautiously welcomed the accord but said it would undergo scrutiny this weekend in Paris at a summit of West African leaders and U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan. Annan also met with Chirac on Friday. Under the accord, a prime minister will be appointed to head a coalition government but will not be able to run in the following presidential election. Officials on both sides said a new prime minister would probably be named this weekend. Delegates from Ivory Coast's warring factions began closed-door talks 10 days ago at a sports stadium south of Paris aimed at ending a four-month uprising in the West African nation. The talks included representatives of the government and the three rebel groups fighting to oust Gbagbo, who came to power in flawed 2000 elections. Former first lady of Cote Divoire, Simone Gbagbo, was rushed to hospital on Thursday with an unspecified ailment. According to her lawyer, the health problems were sufficiently serious to require her immediate transfer to a facility with the sufficient means to treat her. Simone, who was a leading figure in her husband Laurent Gbagbo's FPI party while he was president of Cote Divoire, became the first woman to indicted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity, as of last year. She is being held in Cote D'ivoire on accusations of genocide.

English/Nat At the heavily guarded presidential palace in the Ivory Coast, longtime opposition leader Laurent Gbagbo was sworn in as president on Thursday. Political officials have appealed for an end to the violence blighting Abidjan and other Ivorian cities. Dozens of people are said to have been killed. Laurent Gbagbo was swept to power on Wednesday in a popular uprising that forced the now-ousted junta leader, General Robert Guei, to flee. But followers of Alasane Dramane Ouattara, Ivory Coast's most popular opposition politician, showed their rage that no new elections had been called for this West African nation. Ouattara was excluded from Sunday's presidential elections, which Guei claimed to win. Black smoke from burning tires billowed above Abidjan neighborhoods where Ouattara's backers had blocked off the streets. Gbagbo's party, the Ivorian Popular Front, ruled out sharing power with Ouattara's Rally of the Republicans, and the holding of new elections. The Sunday election was problematic from the start. Ivory Coast's two largest parties - Ouattara's and the former ruling Democratic Party - boycotted the vote after their candidates were barred from running by the Supreme Court. Both accused Gbagbo of going along with an electoral farce by refusing to join the boycott. Guei came to power in a December coup, the first military takeover in Ivory Coast. Instability since has battered the economy and frightened both Ivorians and foreign investors alike. For More Latest News Subscribe us: ABIDJAN: A court in Ivory Coast today sentenced former first lady Simone Gbagbo to a 20-year prison term on charges of "undermining state security" during post-election violence in 2010-2011 that left nearly 3,000 dead. The wife of former Ivorian president Laurent Gbagbo was also accused of "disturbing public order" and "organising armed gangs" after her husband and his supporters rejected results of December 2010 presidential elections showing rival Alassane Ouattara had won the contest. The court "unanimously" condemned her to 20 years in jail, court President Tahirou Dembele said in a statement today. Gbagbo's face hardened as the verdict was read. She was "a little affected" by the sentence, her lawyer Me Rodrigue Dadje told AFP.
