(31 Dec 2004) Africa: Zimbabwe In October, Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai was acquitted on treason charges. His supporters said the government of President Robert Mugabe had orchestrated the trial. The decision surprised many observers who had expected Mugabe to impose his will on a court system that has been criticised as political and corrupt. Tsvangirai's supporters burst into applause inside the courtroom when the verdict was announced. The treason charges stemmed from accusations that Tsvangirai had plotted to kill Mugabe. But the judge said it was clear that the government had attempted to entrap Tsvangirai through a sham associate. The MDC leader, who still faces another treason charge for allegedly advocating the violent ouster of Mugabe, said he felt relieved. Tsvan...

Two men have been sentenced to six months in prison in the first case of wildlife trafficking brought in Ivory Coast. An Ivorian government lawyer said the judgement "sends a signal" that animal trafficking is being taken seriously. The men were arrested while trying to sell an infant chimp to a BBC reporter posing as the representative of a wealthy Asian buyer. Chimpanzees are in such sharp decline they are listed as endangered. Those in West Africa are judged to be critically endangered. Since Ibrahima and Mohamed Traore have remained in prison since their detention last December, they are deemed to have already served their sentences and are therefore free.

English/Nat At the heavily guarded presidential palace in the Ivory Coast, longtime opposition leader Laurent Gbagbo was sworn in as president on Thursday. Political officials have appealed for an end to the violence blighting Abidjan and other Ivorian cities. Dozens of people are said to have been killed. Laurent Gbagbo was swept to power on Wednesday in a popular uprising that forced the now-ousted junta leader, General Robert Guei, to flee. But followers of Alasane Dramane Ouattara, Ivory Coast's most popular opposition politician, showed their rage that no new elections had been called for this West African nation. Ouattara was excluded from Sunday's presidential elections, which Guei claimed to win. Black smoke from burning tires billowed above Abidjan neighborhoods where Ouattara's backers had blocked off the streets. Gbagbo's party, the Ivorian Popular Front, ruled out sharing power with Ouattara's Rally of the Republicans, and the holding of new elections. The Sunday election was problematic from the start. Ivory Coast's two largest parties - Ouattara's and the former ruling Democratic Party - boycotted the vote after their candidates were barred from running by the Supreme Court. Both accused Gbagbo of going along with an electoral farce by refusing to join the boycott. Guei came to power in a December coup, the first military takeover in Ivory Coast. Instability since has battered the economy and frightened both Ivorians and foreign investors alike. I'm sorry, but this is serious, even though here in Ivory Coast, Ivorian justice is not independent, it is under pressure from the country's leaders. Courtroom STORYLINE: Ivory Coast's former first lady Simone Gbagbo went on trial on Monday in Abidjan on charges of crimes against humanity. Her trial began on the same day as her husband's trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) resumed. Ivorian authorities have refused the ICC's request that Simone Gbagbo be transferred to The Hague, preferring to mount their own case against her on charges relating to the post-election violence in 2010 to 2011. More than 3,000 people were killed after former President Laurent Gbagbo refused to accept his defeat to Alassane Ouattara in the 2010 elections, who is now president. Mrs. Gbagbo smiled as she entered court, waving to supporters. She is currently serving a 20-year sentence handed down last year for participation in an insurrection. A verdict against Mrs. Gbagbo is expected at the end of the month, according to local media. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory. The 15-nation regional bloc ECOWAS (Economic Community Of West African States) had threatened military intervention if Gbagbo did not step aside and allow Alassane Ouattara to take over the presidency. The delegation reported on Wednesday on its mission to Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, whose country is the biggest player in ECOWAS. Instead of preparing a military strike on Wednesday, ECOWAS gave Gbagbo more time. A delegation of presidents from Sierra Leone, Benin and Cape Verde on Tuesday had delivered in person what they called an ultimatum to leave. Gbagbo rebuffed their efforts and did not depart the country into exile with them as had been hoped. Jonathan said the delegation would return to Abidjan on Monday. Nigeria has vowed to use "legitimate force" if Gbagbo does not relinquish power. ECOWAS, the Economic Community of West African States, has sent combat troops to several nations in the past two decades. There was no indication of imminent preparations for action in Ivory Coast.
